Guachochi means, in rarámuri, "Place of Herons", named for the number of birds of this species that existed in the place, when this was only a swampy area.
In this municipality there is the Sinforosa ravine, Kokoyome and El Salto waterfalls, among other places of great beauty. There is also the town of Norogachi, which is the population center with the highest rate of Tarahumara.
